Mrs. Landingham: I miss my boys.
Charlie: I never knew you had kids.
Mrs. Landingham: Twins. Andrew and Simon. I tried not to- you know, I dressed them differently, but they still did everything together. They went off to medical school together, and then they finished their second year, and of course their lottery number came up at the same time.
Charlie: For the draft?
Mrs. Landingham: Yeah.
Charlie: Well, I would have thought they could get a deferment to finish med school.
Mrs. Landingham: They didn’t want one. Their father and I begged them, but they wanted to go where people needed doctors. Their father and I begged them, but you can’t tell kids anything. So they joined up as medics, and four months later they were pinned down during a fight in Da Nang and were killed by enemy fire. That was Christmas Eve, 1970. You know, they were so young, Charlie. They were your age. It’s hard when that happens so far away, you know, because with the noises and the shooting, they had to be so scared. It’s hard not to think that right then, they needed their mother. Anyway, I miss my boys.

SAM: You know anything about chaos theory?
MALLORY: I know it has to do with fractal geometry.
SAM: That’s about all I know too. But it has to do with there being order and even… great beauty, in what looks like total choas. And if we look closely enough at the randomness around us, patterns will start to emerge. I love Josh like a brother and he’s a world-class political mind but until today, I didn’t know he was smarter then I was. I’ve worked here three years and eight months and until you sit in the room all day, you can’t comprehend the chaos of the Oval Office. I had one good moment talking about the global ripple effect of budget defict, but that was it. The rest of the day was just keeping up. And this was a pretty light day.
MALLORY: One moment is good.
SAM: Oh, I’m not complaining. I’m saying one good moment is great. It’s a golf shot… I’ve got to get back in there. That’s where it’s happening.

Martin Sheen had no idea that Laura Innes had already made a name for herself playing ER’s sassy Dr. Kerry Weaver when she signed on to direct NBC’s White House drama [The West Wing]. “But my wife sure knew who she was, and boy, did I get a beating for that.”
“My wife asked me who was directing, and I said, ‘Some little girl. Hell, she looks about 14 years old, I don’t know her name,’ ” recalls Sheen. “She looked at the call sheets and said, ‘You a******! Laura Innes is directing! She’s the best thing on ER, man. You’d better go back and behave yourself.’ So I did what my wife told me, and I listened to everything [Innes] had to say.”
Innes seems pretty amused by Sheen’s transformation. “So, Martin’s wife is why he was so nice to me?” she asks us. “I guess I’ll have to send her flowers or something.”
